High School Course Catalog

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this booklet is to assist Chiang Mai International high school students, with the guidance of their parents, to choose courses for the 2020-2021 school year.  At CMIS, students must successfully complete specific courses to be eligible to graduate, however students may want to look at what the University of their choice requires for incoming freshmen.  All course credit requirements must be met within time of graduation. Thai students are expected to take Thai GL (Grammar and Language) courses for all four years. College-level Advanced Placement (AP) courses are also offered in a number of different subject areas, and students are encouraged to take advantage of these challenging academic opportunities. Students who wish to obtain the AP Capstone Diploma must take the Seminar course in 11th grade and the research course in 12th grade. The Faculty of teachers encourages students to challenge themselves in their course selection, explore their interests, and find a balance between the two.

Please study this booklet carefully and complete the subject choice form before March 6th. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your HS Counselor or myself, the HS Principal. We endeavor to meet the social and academic needs of all students and provide appropriate preparation for life after graduation.

The CMIS educational program is designed to support our international and host nation students by providing a K-12 aligned curriculum. Our teachers provide instruction that adheres to a standards-based curriculum. CMIS students are expected to show proficiency in the core subjects of Math, Science, Social Studies, and English. Our program is designed to provide students with elective courses that allow them to explore their interests in the fine arts and world languages as well. Acknowledging the diversity of our students and teachers, we also seek to enhance the curriculum by incorporating best practices from around the world. All curriculum support materials are aligned to the standards. CMIS uses the most current research pedagogy and strategies to deliver course content. Educators at CMIS are strong proponents for inclusive classroom practices, and fostering social-emotional learning. Student evaluations are based on a school wide common grading belief founded on the understanding that grades are to reflect student learning.  All curriculum support materials are aligned to the standards. Alternatively, students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate™ signifying their attainment of college-level academic and research skills.

A Graduation Diploma is awarded to those students who have fulfilled the graduation requirements and maintained a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 1.7. An Honors Graduation Diploma is awarded to students who successfully maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and complete three AP classes with exams. Students considering post-secondary education should discuss with the Guidance Counselor the requirements specific to the country in which they are intending to study.

The title of Valedictorian and Salutatorian are awarded to the two Honors graduating students who have the highest cumulative GPAs. If there is a tie then honors will be decided by the number of AP courses taken. In rare cases the honor may be awarded to two students.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college level courses offered in high school and are regulated by the College Board. All courses offered at CMIS as AP courses have been course-audit approved by the College Board. Therefore you can expect academic rigor and expectations to be at a higher level with a greater workload in many cases. Some AP courses have prerequisite requirements, while others do not (check individual subject descriptions).  You should consult with both the course teacher and the Guidance Counselor, if you have any questions, or doubts about the expectations of the course and your preparedness to take on the workload.

Students enrolling in AP courses will also be offered the opportunity to take the College Board AP exams at the end of the academic year (usually during the first two weeks of May). Taking the College Board exam is not compulsory, but you are strongly encouraged to do so since the course prepares you for this exam and there is the possibility of earning college/university credit. Please note, Grade 10 students may only take one AP course per semester. Sophomores are allowed to enroll in one AP course, Juniors and Seniors are not permitted to take more than three AP courses per semester.
More details about the College Board AP Program can be found at: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/about.html

AP Capstone™ is a College Board program that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. It cultivates curious, independent, and collaborative scholars and prepares them to make logical, evidence-based decisions. AP Capstone comprises two AP courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, and is designed to complement and enhance the discipline-specific study in other AP courses. Participating schools can use the AP Capstone program to provide unique research opportunities for current AP students, or to expand access to AP by encouraging students to master the argument-based writing skills that the AP Capstone program develops.  Learn more about AP Capstone Diploma Program by clicking on this LINK.

If a student wishes to change or withdraw from a course (we strongly encourage them to do so within the first week of the semester) however students have a maximum of up to two weeks (10 school days) to drop/add a course. Students must fill out a “CMIS Schedule Change Form”, also available in the counseling office. This form requires both the signatures of a parent or guardian and current teacher of the course.

Dropping a course:
Occasionally, a change to a schedule is necessary and can be accomplished with the help of the School Counselor.  Adding and dropping classes is permitted during the first two weeks of a semester.  If a student wishes to drop a class once the semester has started they have the first nine weeks of the semester to drop a class with a “W” showing on their transcripts.  Students may not drop a class after 9 weeks in a semester.

If a student is going to completely withdraw from Chiang Mai International School they will need to download and complete the Withdrawal Form and email the completed form to the Human Resources Office. All CMIS loaned materials including textbooks, locker, and Chromebook needs to be returned and all financial accounts need to be settled and closed.
