Chemistry is the High School course which will help students understand the answers to questions such as Why does oil burn? Why does water put out fires? How do batteries generate electricity? Why is water a liquid? and How can we see through glass, but not through paper? Answering these questions requires us to understand the world of atoms and molecules and the interactions between them. This forms the basis for understanding the materials around us and inside us, and is the foundation for developing new materials to be used in science, technology, and medicine. Students who take this course will come to see chemistry as being relevant to their lives whether this course is the only chemistry course taken, or is a preparation for AP Chemistry, and further study at university. Units of study include the structure of matter, chemical reactions, and chemical bonding. In addition to the textbook and online resources, the course includes an outside nonfiction reader, Stuff Matters by Mark Miodownik.
