Course Description

Writing With Style offers students focused time in which to hone and develop their text analysis and writing skills. This workshop course offers independent and one-on-one practice under the guidance of the instructor. The specific intention is to increase the effectiveness of the student's reading and writing in the following areas: close reading of a variety of complex text types, proper English mechanics and grammar usage, developing evidence-based claims, communicating a clear message, developing a theme, and writing for a specific purpose. Curriculum materials come from the New York Times Learning Network based on real-world writing found in newspapers, from editorials and reviews to personal narratives and analysis essays. The course utilizes engaging activities and presents students with high-interest reading texts focused on current, student-related issues.
