Course Description

Grade 9 English is aimed at developing writing, reading and communication skills based on the Common Core Standards while fostering independent critical thinking skills. Over the course of the year, students work with four units from the My Perspectives curriculum: Identity, Literature of the Civil Rights, Shakespeare Studies, and Dystopian Futures. Through these readings, students will be exposed to a variety of genres, including short stories, novels, drama, and nonfiction.  Student writing will focus on several different writing purposes and styles. Students will work in a writer’s notebook and conduct other writing projects in informative, persuasive, and analytical genres to strengthen their skills as lifelong writers. They will learn appropriate usage of technology as a research, writing, and learning tool. Through these various projects and activities, students will prepare for the college-ready requirements of their senior year and post-secondary work.
