Course Description

Building upon the skills developed in English 9, English 10 advances student growth in writing, reading and communication skills based on the Common Core Standards, as well as strengthening independent critical thinking skills. Using the myPerspectives Grade 9-12 English Language Arts program, students read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts while engaging in activities that inspire thoughtful conversation, discussion, and debate on these works and the broader thematic issues and real-world problems they explore.  Each Unit of study centers around a theme and essential question through which students study, research, and debate the connected issues raised in each text.  A variety of focused writing activities work on student knowledge and use of vocabulary, academic terms, grammar, sentence structures, and essay types.  Communication skills grow with small team and whole class discussions that move into larger performance tasks that mix individual and team presentations to an audience of peers with research and writing.  The course prepares students for success in English 11, as well as AP English Language and AP Seminar.  A foundation is set for AP English Literature and AP Research.
