History

Discover the legacy of the first international school in Chiang Mai, shaped by vision, excellence, and the milestones that define its enduring tradition.

Missionaries returning to work with the Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT) after World War II established a school for their children in Chiang Mai.  Classes began on June 1, 1954 with eight students.  In 1958, construction began on the present campus for the “Chiang Mai Children’s Center.”  Student numbers grew as more expatriate families seeking an English-language education for their children moved to Chiang Mai.

In 1984, representatives of the Thai Foreign Ministry and the CCT agreed that the formal establishment of an international school in Chiang Mai was a necessary step to achieving the school’s legal status.  Classes began in September 1985 for Kindergarten to Grade 8 under the new name “Chiang Mai International School” (CMIS).  High school grades were progressively added from 1992 to 1995.

Today, CMIS is a dynamic international school with over 500 students, but it is still small enough to retain a friendly and relaxed campus environment.  It also remains true to the traditions of its founders, serving missionary families and maintaining the heritage and values of the Christian faith at the heart of the school, while welcoming children of all faiths, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds from the growing international community in Chiang Mai.

Seven Decades of History

From eight students to a thriving international community

JUNE 1, 1954

A School Is Born

Missionaries of the Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT), returning after World War II, established a school for their children in Chiang Mai. Classes opened with just eight students, laying the first stones of what would become CMIS.

1958

A Home of Its Own

Construction began on the present campus, establishing the Cheingmai Children's Center (C.C.C.). As more expatriate families sought English-language education, the student body continued to grow.

1964

Ora Et Labora

The school shield was designed by the late Mr. W.A.R. Wood. The motto "Ora Et Labora" is represented by the cross and the bee. The cross symbolizes a prayerful Christian life, the bee symbolizes hard work.

September, 1985

Chiang Mai International School

Under the new name "Chiang Mai International School" (CMIS), classes began for Kindergarten through Grade 8 — marking the school's transformation into a fully recognised international institution.

1992

High School Grades Added

Grades 9 through 12 were progressively introduced over three years, completing CMIS as a full K–12 school and opening pathways for students through to graduation.

Today

A Thriving Community

CMIS is home to over 500 students from the international community in Chiang Mai — diverse in faith, culture, and background, yet united in a warm, relaxed campus spirit. The school remains rooted in its founding Christian values while welcoming all.
